If the observed association is causal, interventions directed at increasing dietary or plasma magnesium might lower the risk of sudden cardiac death."

    Adding Magnesium to Your Diet
    Rich sources of magnesium can be obtained from a diet high in green leafy vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. The minimum recommended daily allowance for the mineral is set at 320 mg per day for women while men need 420 mg. Studies indicate that the vast majority of adults are deficient in their daily intake, despite their best efforts to eat a diet enriched with magnesium.

  • New technology to grow eggs on women’s arms Doctors at Army Hospital Research and Referral have found a procedure to help women cancer survivors conceive. Every year, cancer treatment causes premature menopause and infertility in thousands of women of reproductive age in India. The eggs will be grown in a woman's forearm, which, the doctorsat the hospital claim, is a first-of-its-kind procedure in the country.

    "In January we will transplant her preserved ovarian tissue under the skin of her forearm to harvest eggs, which will help her conceive in future. This is the first time that this type of transplant is taking place in the country," said Lieutenant General Naresh Kumar, commandant, Army Hospital Research and Referral.

    The ovarian tissue of cancer patients will be preserved in the lab before treatment, which can later be grafted on their forearm or abdomen when they would want to have children.

    “The tissue will be pre-tested to avoid possibility of any cancer cells in them, and to help the ovarian tissue to produce eggs, specifics drugs will be administered to these women," said lieutenant-general Kumar.

    The procedure brings a ray of hope for many couples, as premature menopause and infertility is a potential side-effect of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, etc.

    "The woman, who is cancer-free, will undergo a surgery under local anaesthesia, wherein we'll implant an ovarian piece beneath the skin of her forearm. The eggs should develop after some days. She will notice a pea-sized lump at the transplant site, from where we'll extract eggs later for in-vitro fertilisation," said Kumar. The entire process is expected to take three to four months and costs between R1.5 lakh to R2 lakh.

    "If a child was to take a big spoonful of this fluoride, I don't think he could swallow it," she says, "but if he did get it down, it is a poison and the child could die. If a child ingested a whole tube of toothpaste, he should be taken right to the emergency room and he would either get his stomach pumped or get some kind of antidote."

    Three ingredients found in most toothpastes pose health risks if too much is ingested, according to Miskewitz. Sorbitol, a liquid that keeps toothpaste from drying out, is a laxative that could cause diarrhea in children. Sodium lauryl sulfate, an ingredient that makes toothpaste foam, can also be a diarrheic. But the fluoride poses the most danger if too much toothpaste is swallowed -- particularly to younger children.

    "Small amounts of this material go a long way in causing disruption in their bodies because they are so small," Miskewitz says. "The fluoride in toothpaste is considered a drug. Even though it is an over-the-counter drug, we are altering the body when we brush our teeth with a fluoride toothpaste or tooth gel. . . . As normal consumers, you're not aware of these things. But I'm sure our 800 number is going to get more calls as products with the new warnings show up on store shelves."

    This summer, as toothpaste shipments with the new labeling replace older inventories, consumers will see nearly twice the warnings displayed on the back of tubes and cartons -- the ADA's general warnings along with the new FDA-required statement that starts with: "Keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age."

    Research has shown that because they aren't yet in control of their swallowing reflex, children 4 to 6 years old typically swallow toothpaste when brushing. "That's why it's recommended that kids get only a pea-size amount of toothpaste," says Miskewitz, "because most of that goes down their throats."

    A 1995 study at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry found that about half the children this age don't spit out or rinse out -- they swallow the toothpaste instead. Making matters worse, they tend to use too much toothpaste on their own -- especially when they use flavored children's toothpastes.

    While the cavity-preventing effectiveness of fluoride has been demonstrated, too much fluoride not only can be dangerous, it can cause a condition known as fluorosis that discolors or spots developing teeth. Research conducted by the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center concluded that brushing with more than a pea-size amount of toothpaste more than once daily contributed to most of the fluorosis cases it observed in young children. In areas where the drinking water contains fluoride, children who swallow even the pea-size amount of toothpaste are getting too much fluoride and are at risk for fluorosis.

    "I haven't heard of problems beyond fluorosis, but that's a valid concern. There are some kids getting too much fluoride," says Nancy Rosenzweig, vice president of corporate communication and market development at Tom's of Maine, which in 1975 introduced the first "natural" toothpaste on the market.

    "That's why Tom Chappell started making toothpaste. He was in his bathroom reading ingredient labels and saying 'You know, there's a lot of stuff in here that you really shouldn't be putting into your mouth.' "

    Besides its natural toothpastes that contain fluoride, the small Kennebunkport-based company makes a nonfluoride toothpaste in flavors including "cinnamint" and "fennel." When Tom's recently began marketing its new line of natural toothpaste for children, it left out the synthetic sweeteners, neon colors and bubble gum flavors. But the toothpastes, called Silly Strawberry and Outrageous Orange, contain the same levels of fluoride as competitors' toothpastes.

    "It is always kind of a trade-off," explains Rosenzweig. "We made a decision to have only fluoride toothpaste for children because that has been proven to be the overall benefit of toothpaste for children. We feel the benefit outweighs the negative."

    As for natural fruit flavorings being more attractive to a child's taste buds than mint-flavored adult toothpastes, Rosenzweig says Tom's chose wholesome flavors that would lure children to brushing. "You have to get the education across to your kids that you don't suck the toothpaste down, just as you have to work with your kids to brush their teeth," she says. "The alternative is they don't brush. I guess we don't feel like the risk factor is that high to make that trade-off."

    In fact, many in the toothpaste industry feel the new FDA warnings may be overstating the risks.

    "Our position was that they went a little too far," says Clifford Whall, director of product evaluations on the ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs. "There wasn't really a need for the cautionary statement about the danger of poisoning if you've ingested too much.

    "If children were to sit around the bathroom eating toothpaste, which younger children could do, there is not enough fluoride in the toothpaste to cause them any acute harm. That just doesn't happen. . . . If you tried to eat a lot of toothpaste, you'd throw it up."

    While Whall concedes that poison control centers do receive reports of fluoride "poisonings" every year, he says the ADA isn't aware of any of those cases resulting in adverse effects. "It just hasn't proven to be that kind of a problem. . . . We didn't think you needed a label like that because it could unnecessarily scare consumers into not using toothpaste."

    A new study has found that a “thrifty” gene that once helped our ancestors survive famines could be to blame for obesity.

    Researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies found that mice bred to lack the CRTC3 (thrifty) gene were able to eat a diet high in fat, while normal mice who had the CRTC3 gene and ate the same diet packed on the pounds.

    Study findings also revealed that animals without the CRTC3 gene were leaner than those with the gene, which also raises their risk of diabetes.

    “If you feed them a diet that has up to 60 percent of calories from fat, their normal brothers and sisters that have the CRTC3 gene gain weight and become obese, insulin resistant and some go on to develop diabetes, but those who don’t have the CRTC3 gene remain lean and insulin sensitive,” lead researcher Dr. Marc Montminy told Reuters.

    In their attempt to determine whether the same effects manifested in humans, scientists found that Mexican Americans who have a mutation of the thrifty gene have a higher risk of becoming obese. However, the CRTC3 gene did not seem to affect non-Hispanic whites with the genetic variant the same way, further proving that obesity is very complex.

    The CRTC3 gene “slows down the rate at which the fat cells burn fat,” Dr. Montminy told Reuters. Having the gene could have been an advantage to our ancestors, who sometimes were forced to go a long time in between meals, but can be a disadvantage in modern first world countries, where food is abundant.

    Dr. Montminy noted that given the study findings, pharmaceutical companies may focus future research at offsetting the effects of the CRTC3 gene to treat and prevent obesity.

    The Anatomy of Nipple Sensation
    All sensation is based upon nerve connectivity, and in particular, a certain set of nerves called the fourth intercostal nerve branch provides sensation to the nipple. These nerves extend from the chest wall to the nipple and if any of them are severed or damaged - or if their blood supply is cut off - the result may be diminished nipple sensation.

    Surgeons must use careful techniques in order to avoid damaging this nerve branch and to promote proper healing and nipple sensitivity. Depending on the specific type of breast surgery being performed, some methods are better at preserving nerves than others. The following are a few cases in which permanent sensation loss may occur, along with techniques surgeons can use to help preserve feeling.

    With Breast Augmentation
    With breast augmentation, the nerves below the nipple are not typically cut, but can be damaged or stretched when the surgeon maneuvers the implant inside the breast. This is particularly true in cases where larger breast implants are used. While there is some debate about incision location and implant placement affecting post-operative nipple sensitivity, the strongest evidence supports the size of the implant as being the major determining factor in sensation loss.

    Essentially, the larger the implant placed in the breast pocket, the more pressure that the implant puts on the nerves and tissue within that pocket. If there is a large implant and a smaller breast pocket, the risk is even greater.

    There has also been evidence that placing breast implants under the pectoral muscles preserves sensation more than sub-glandular placement. This may be because, when the implant is under the muscle, it places less pressure on the fourth intercostal nerve branch. Choosing a moderately sized implant and placing the implant below the muscle may help reduce the risk of sensation loss.

    With Breast Reduction
    Unlike breast augmentation, breast reduction carries significantly more risk for decreased nipple sensation. This is because the nerves may need to be cut in order to sufficiently remove enough breast tissue. In more extreme cases, a plastic surgeon may need to remove the nipple entirely to reposition it. Called a free nipple graft, this method allows the surgeon to remove more tissue, but it severs the blood supply and nerves, almost guaranteeing loss of nipple sensation.

    The more common pedicle method of breast reduction in Seattle is a much better way to preserve nipple sensation. Instead of completely severing the nipple from the nerves and surrounding tissue, the surgeon will leave the nipple attached to a section of tissue called a "pedicle" that contains the milk ducts, nerves, and blood supply. Because the nerves remain intact, it is far less likely that patients will permanently and fully lose sensation.

    With Breast Lift
    Breast lifts are often very similar to breast reduction, in that the nipple may need to be moved, increasing the chances of nerve damage and stretching. Some surgeries will sever the nerves, requiring months of healing for the nerves to (hopefully) regenerate and sensation to return. Typically, the more dramatic the lift and the more the nipple needs to be moved, the greater the patient's chances of losing nipple sensation. However, in many cases, the surgeon can use a similar technique to the pedicle method to maintain the nerve connection to the nipple when performing the breast lift.

    What You Can Do
    All breast surgeries usually result in temporary sensation loss, since incisions can damage surface nerves. However, these nerves typically grow back, returning sensation over a period of about 3 to 6 months on average.

    WASHINGTON, DC, - Tap water from 31 of 35 U.S. cities tested contains hexavalent chromium, or chromium-6, according to laboratory tests commissioned by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group and revealed in a report Saturday. The highest levels were detected in Norman, Oklahoma; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Riverside, California.

    The cancer-causing chemical is best known to the general public from the 2000 movie "Erin Brockovich," starring Julia Roberts.

    The film dramatized the plight of the cancer-stricken residents of Hinkley, California, who in 1996 won a $333 million settlement from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. for contaminating their tap water with hexavalent chromium.

    The Environmental Working Group says, "Despite mounting evidence of the contaminant's toxic effects, including a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency draft toxicological review that classifies it as 'likely to be carcinogenic to humans' when consumed in drinking water, the agency has not set a legal limit for chromium-6 in tap water and does not require water utilities to test for it."

    Hexavalent chromium is discharged from steel and pulp mills as well as metal-plating and leather-tanning facilities. It can pollute water through erosion of soil and rock, the EWG report shows.

  • Family Stress Causes Angina Pain Study Shows Demanding Relationship With a Partner May Have an Impact on Heart Health

    Just in time for those holiday family gatherings comes news that family stress -- especially stress involving spouses and children -- may hurt the heart.

    People in a Danish study who reported having a worrisome or demanding relationship with a partner had a more than threefold increased risk for developing the severe chest pain condition known as angina.

    Angina is both a warning sign and symptom of heart disease.

    Researchers followed more than 4,500 men and women in their 40s and 50s with no known heart problems for six years. Those with the most stressful close family relationships had the highest risk of developing angina.

    Study researcher Rikke Lund, MD, PhD, says it has long been known that positive social relationships are good for the heart. “We wanted to look at it another way and examine the impact of difficult social relationships on cardiovascular risk,” she tells WebMD.

    Family Stress and the Heart

    The randomly selected study participants were followed from 1999 to 2006, when they were asked about both their heart health and the quality of their relationships with the people in their lives, including partners, children, other relatives, friends, and neighbors.

    Participants were specifically asked about the level of demand placed on them by family members and friends, the degree of worry associated with each relationship, and the degree and frequency of conflict.

    During the six years of follow-up, roughly one in 10 study participants developed chest pains associated with angina.

    Not surprisingly, older participants were more likely to report the condition than younger ones.

    Having a worrisome or demanding relationship with a spouse or partner was associated with a more than 3.5-fold increase in angina risk, while a similar relationship with a child was associated with a twofold increase in risk.

    The association was not quite as strong for other family members, and the impact of worries and demands involving non-family members was negligible.

    Surprisingly, conflict with family members was much less strongly linked to angina risk than being in a worrisome or demanding relationship. People who reported having frequent arguments with a partner had a 44% increase in angina risk.

    Second Opinion

    Psychologist William R. Lovallo, PhD, who wrote the 2004 book Stress and Health: Biological and Psychological Interactions, says the study provides more evidence linking social relationships with health.

    But he adds that it is not clear if the quality of these relationships has a direct impact on conditions like angina.

    Lovallo is with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Oklahoma City and the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center.

    “It is tempting to assume that bad social relationships cause medical symptoms, but we have to be careful about making this association,” he tells WebMD.

    Lovallo cites earlier research by the same investigators suggesting a link between hostility and poor health.

    “It would come as no surprise that people who are hostile by nature would have more difficulties in social relationships,” he says. “So it may not be the social relationships that lead to symptoms like angina.”

    But cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, MD, says stress clearly has a negative impact on the heart. She says it is increasingly clear that interventions to relieve stress, such as meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy, can benefit the heart.

    “The biggest challenge for me is getting patients to accept that they need to take steps to lower stress,” says Goldberg, who is a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association. “I live and work in New York City where most people view stress as a fact of life. But worry and stress are not good for the heart, no matter where you live.”

    Properties of cherry juice examined
    In a bid to ascertain whether tart cherry juice influences the recovery process following a marathon, the researchers conducted a study.

    Physiologists examined the properties of the tart juice in 20 athletes who ran in the London Marathon.

    In the experiment, the runners were assigned to drink either 50 ml of tart cherry juice or a calorie matched placebo two times daily for five days before taking part in the race and for two days afterwards.

    As a part of the investigation, blood samples were taken six days prior to the race, immediately on completion of the event, and then at one and two days after the marathon.

    Experts then analyzed the samples for muscle damage. In addition, markers for muscle soreness were measured one day before the marathon and again after the completion of the race.

    Outcome of the study
    The investigators noted that the group who drank the cherry juice recovered their strength faster, 48 hours after the marathon, compared to those who drank the fake drink.

    In addition, it was observed that inflammation levels and oxidative stress that can be an outcome of strenuous physical activity was lower in the cherry juice group.

    The researchers concluded that cherry juice appears to increase total antioxidant status offering greater defence against oxidative stress, thereby aiding in the quick recovery of muscle function after the marathon.

    Implications of the study
    According to experts, the findings of the study suggest that cherry juice could be beneficial in treating people afflicted with inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis

    A new study pre-published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives confirms that fluoridated water causes brain damage in children. The most recent among 23 others pertaining to fluoride and lowered IQ levels, the new study so strongly proves that fluoride is a dangerous, brain-destroying toxin that experts say it could be the one that finally ends water fluoridation.

    "This is the 24th study that has found this association," explained Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). "[B]ut this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children's blood."

    For the study, researchers evaluated 512 children ages 8-13 in two Chinese villages, one village with higher than average fluoride levels and the other with lower than average fluoride levels. After accounting for external variables like lead exposure, iodine deficiency and other conditions that might affect brain health, the team still found that the number of higher intelligence children in the low fluoride community was 350 percent higher than the number in the high fluoride community.

    "In this study we found a significant dose-response relation between fluoride level in serum and children's IQ," wrote the study authors.

    Though there have been numerous studies over the years the identify fluoride as a neurotoxin, most mainstream medical professionals in the U.S. have ignored them and continue to support water fluoridation. But the evidence continues to mount, and sooner or later the medical community will have to come to grips with the truth about fluoride.

    "This should be the study that finally ends water fluoridation," explained Tara Blank, Ph.D., Science and Health Officer at FAN. "Millions of American children are being exposed unnecessarily to this neurotoxin on a daily basis. Who in their right minds would risk lowering their child's intelligence in order to reduce a small amount of tooth decay, for which the evidence is very weak."

    A study shows that a glass of orange juice can calm oxidative stress that comes from eating a high fat and high carbohydrate meal that can also lead to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Flavonoids in orange juice, naringenin and hesperidin, may be responsible for the potent effect on neutralizing oxidative and inflammatory stress that occurs from consuming unhealthy foods, shown in a small study.

    The finding, from University at Buffalo endocrinologists, shows for the first time how orange juice, taken with a high fat high carbohydrate meal, could reduce inflammation in the lining of the blood vessels from oxidative stress, in turn reducing risk of heart attack and stroke.

    To find the benefits of orange juice for promoting blood vessel health despite eating an unhealthy meal, 10 study participants between the ages of 10 and 40 were given a meal consisting of 81 grams of carbohydrates, 51 grams of fat and 32 grams of protein. One group drank water, one drank orange juice not from concentrate, and another group was given a 300 calorie glucose drink.

    Blood tests showed significantly less blood vessel inflammation in the study group given orange juice, measure by blood tests at intervals. Orange juice also blocked SO3, an important mediator of insulin resistance that plays a role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

    Before the meal, there were no differences in inflammatory markers among the study participants. After eating the high fat high carbohydrate meal oxygen free radicals increased 62 percent with water, 63 percent with the glucose drink, and 47 percent among the study group given orange juice.

    Paresh Dandona, MD, senior study author says, "These data emphasize that a high-fat, high-carbohydrate meal is profoundly and rapidly proinflammatory, and that this process occurs at the cellular and molecular level", adding that the effect of oxidative stress from an unhealthy high fat high carbohydrate diet leads to an “increase in the mediators of insulin resistance after a single meal, and the equally remarkable prevention of these changes following the intake of orange juice."

    Regular consumption of unhealthy foods leads to blood vessel damage and inflammation from oxidative stress, raising the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. Consuming healthy foods is an important part of heart disease prevention.

    The new study shows that orange juice, taken with a high fat, high carbohydrate meal could help prevent inflammation and heart disease. Flavonoids in orange juice seem to have a positive effect for reducing oxidative stress that can lead to atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes.

In woman who have a high testosterone from the insulin resistance (known as polycystic ovary syndrome, or "PCOS," and sometimes associated with increased facial hair), the metformin can improve overall well being and even restore fertility. Give it 3 months to work, and be sure you are taking 500 mcg of vitamin B12 a day with it as the metformin depletes vitamin B12.

    Vitamin D toxicity usually results from taking an excessive amount of vitamin D supplements — not from your diet or too much sun exposure. That's because your body regulates the amount of vitamin D produced from sun exposure, and even fortified foods don't contain large amounts of vitamin D.

    Although vitamin D toxicity is rare even among people who take supplements, you may be at greater risk if you have health problems, such as liver or kidney conditions, or if you take thiazide-type diuretics. As always, make sure your doctor is aware of any vitamins or supplements you take.

    The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), causing symptoms such as:

    * Nausea
    * Vomiting
    * Poor appetite
    * Constipation
    * Weakness
    * Confusion
    * Heart rhythm abnormalities
    * Kidney stones

    Treatment of vitamin D toxicity may include stopping vitamin D supplements and restricting calcium intake, as well as taking medication. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

    * Don't store cosmetics at temperatures above 85 degrees F. Cosmetics held for long periods in hot cars, for example, are more susceptible to deterioration of the preservative.

    * When applying or removing eye cosmetics, be careful not to scratch the eyeball or other sensitive area. Never apply or remove eye cosmetics in a moving vehicle.

    * Don't use any cosmetics near your eyes unless they are intended specifically for that use. For instance, don't use a lip liner as an eye liner. You may be exposing your eyes to contamination from your mouth, or to color additives that are not approved for use in the area of the eye.

    * Avoid color additives that are not approved for use in the area of the eye, such as "permanent" eyelash tints and kohl. Be especially careful to keep kohl away from children, since reports have linked it to lead poisoning.

  • Pediatric brain cancer cracked Genome code for most common form of pediatric brain cancer cracked

    The genetic code for medulloblastoma, the most common pediatric brain cancer and a leading killer of children with cancer, have been decoded by scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

    The genetic "map" is believed to be the first reported of a pediatric cancer genome.

    Notably, the findings show that children with medulloblastoma have five- to tenfold fewer cancer-linked alterations in their genomes compared with their adult counterparts, the scientists said.

    "These analyses clearly show that genetic changes in pediatric cancers are remarkably different from adult tumors. With fewer alterations, the hope is that it may be easier to use the information to develop new therapies for them," said Victor Velculescu, associate professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

    The Johns Hopkins team used automated tools to sequence hundreds of millions of individual chemicals called nucleotides, which pair together in a preprogrammed fashion to build DNA and, in turn, a genome.

    Combinations of these nucleotide letters form genes, which provide instructions that guide cell activity. Alterations in the nucleotides, called mutations, can create coding errors that transform a normal cell into a cancerous one. The scientists at Johns Hopkins have previously mapped genome sequences for pancreatic, adult brain, breast and colon cancers with similar methods.

    For the study, scientists sequenced nearly all protein-encoding genes in 22 samples of pediatric medulloblastoma and compared these sequences with normal DNA from each patient to identify tumor-specific changes or mutations. Each tumor sample had an average of 11 mutations. There were 225 mutations in all.

    Then, the investigators searched through a second set of 66 medulloblastomas, including some samples from adults, to find how these mutations altered the proteins made by the genes.

    The team found that most of the mutations congregate within a few gene families or pathways. The most prevalent pathway ordered the way long strands of DNA, that make up chromosomes, are twisted and shaped into dense packets that open and close depending on when genes need to be activated. Such a process is regulated by chemicals that operate outside of genes, termed "epigenetic" by scientists.

    Within the epigenetic pathway, two commonly mutated genes were both involved in how molecules called histones wrap around DNA.

    "These epigenetic changes may be more important than we thought in childhood cancers," said Will Parsons, an assistant professor at Texas Children's Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine.

    Mutations in MLL2 and MLL3 were identified in 16 percent of the entire set of 88 medulloblastoma samples. Add to this three other epigenetic alterations found by the scientists in the genome scan, and the total set accounts for 20 percent of mutations in all the brain cancer samples.

    Second to epigenetic pathways were gene mutations in pathways such as Hedgehog and Wnt that control tissue and organ development in humans and other animals. Both pathways have previously been linked to childhood medulloblastoma.

  • Barack Obama signs "hunger-free" act for kids Thousands of Middle Tennessee children will soon have greater access to healthier meal options. Monday, Dec. 13, President Barack Obama signed into law the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new legislation will enhance the quality of school meals, set new safety guidelines for school food, and, for the first time, establish nutrition standards for all solid foods sold in schools.

    In the White House’s online newsroom, U.S. Senator Bill Frist is quoted as saying:

    “As Vice Chair of the Partnership for a Healthier America, I join President Obama and the First Lady in celebrating the signing of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This bi-partisan legislation will significantly enhance the quality of food for our children for generations to come and is a dramatic step forward in reducing childhood obesity. As a physician, I know smart nutrition leads to healthy and productive lives. With 36.5% of our children in Tennessee being overweight, this act goes a long way in ensuring that kids in Tennessee and around the country will have the healthy nutrition they deserve.”

    Other key law makers, as well as thousands of state and national agencies echoed support for the law and the perceived impact it will have on the health of our nation’s youth.

    The legislation is three-fold:

    It will improve access for students to school lunches through use of Medicaid and census data; by allowing reimbursements for Child and Adult Food Program providers; and by providing funding for innovative state and local projects aimed at promoting food security for low-income children.

    It will increase the focus on nutrition quality and children’s health by increasing the reimbursement rate for school lunches; removing junk food from schools by applying nutritional standards; promoting nutrition and wellness in child care settings; connecting more children to healthy produce from local farms; strengthening school wellness policies; and supporting breast-feeding for low-income women.

    Finally, it will improve program management and integrity by supporting schools’ food service budgets; providing professional standards training programs for school food service providers; streamlining administrative tasks; increasing the efficiency and modernizing the WIC program; and improving food safety requirements for school meals.

    The legislation is full funded by existing grants and funding. Lawmakers say it will come at no additional cost to taxpayers, and in fact, will save $4.5 billion over the next 10 years by better management of existing funding.

    Hot Water Bath

But a word of caution, be sure that your heart, arteries and blood pressure can stand the shock.

After the cold water experience, always towel dry completely and quickly.   • Naturally High Hemoglobin Not A Worry For Kidney Patients hemoglobin
    Naturally occurring high hemoglobin levels don't pose a threat to chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on dialysis, and there is no need to lower these levels, a new study suggests.

    Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

    Progressive anemia (red blood cell deficiency) is common in most patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. The anemia must be treated with medications, but treatment is controversial because restoring hemoglobin levels to the normal range of about 14 g/dL may lead to dangerous blood clots or even increased risk of death, according to the researchers.

    They wanted to find out if chronic kidney disease patients with naturally high levels of hemoglobin were also at risk. They examined four months of data from 29,796 dialysis patients in 12 countries enrolled in an international dialysis outcome study.

    During those four months, 1.8 percent of the patients maintained hemoglobin levels greater than 12 g/dL without the use of medications. These patients were more likely to be men, to have been receiving dialysis for more years, and to have underlying cystic kidney disease.

    High levels of hemoglobin were also associated with conditions that lower oxygen levels in the blood, such as lung disease, cardiovascular disease and smoking, according to an American Society of Nephrology news release.

    After adjusting for age, sex and other coexisting conditions, the researchers found patients with naturally high levels of hemoglobin did not have an increased risk of death, compared to those with lower hemoglobin levels or with those taking medications to maintain hemoglobin levels higher than 12 g/dL.

    The study appears Dec. 16 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

  • Poor diet can trigger mental illness
    Change in diet is known to ease abnormal behaviour in the mentally ill. But a study in the US shows that diet might also trigger the onset of mental illness.

    Joseph Garner, Purdue University associate professor of animal sciences, fed mice a diet high in sugar and tryptophan that was expected
    to reduce abnormal hair-pulling, the journal Nutritional Neuroscience reported.

    Instead, mice that were already ill worsened or started scratching themselves. The seemingly healthy mice also developed the same abnormal behaviour, according to a Purdue release.

    "This strain of mouse is predisposed to being either a scratcher or a hair-puller. Giving them this diet brought out those dietpredispositions," Garner said.

    Garner studies trichotillomania, a disorder in which people pull out their hair. The disorder, which disproportionately occurs in women, is thought to affect 2-4 percent of the population.

    Mice that pull their hair out have been shown to have low levels of serotonin activity in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects mood and impulses and is made from the amino acid tryptophan, which is found in diets.

    Garner hypothesised that increasing serotonin activity in the brain might cure or reduce trichotillomania.

    The problem is that tryptophan often doesn't cross the barrier between blood and the brain because other amino acids essentially block the door for tryptophan.

    Garner modified a mouse diet to increase simple carbohydrates, or sugars, and tryptophan. The sugars trigger a release of insulin, which causes muscles to absorb those other amino acids and gives tryptophan a chance to make it to the brain.

    Using eight times as much sugar and four times as much tryptophan, Garner observed a doubling of serotonin activity in the brain. But the mice that barbered did not get better.

    "We put them on this diet, and it made them much, much worse," Garner said.
